practicing presence... We live in a great neighborhood for walking. Like most of the places on Cape, it's a bit like a rabbit warren, where one road weaves into another, feathering off in a few different directions that eventually loop back, allowing for all sorts of possibilities for routes. It's entirely residential and off the main connector roads, so it's quiet except for the light traffic of those who live here year round. For the last few months, we've been walking the neighborhood. Twice a day. Morning and evening. And early on, we just decided to wave. To everyone. Even those we don't know. We wave to people passing by in cars, walking dogs or strollers, working in the lawn... everyone gets a wave. Kai chooses a sort of "cool" wave or a light pass of the hand that might be mistaken for swatting a mosquito - but I commit to an exuberant wave, with eye contact and an easy smile. It's been a simple little experiment. How can I be more local - more present - more attentive and intentional. It's a practice of grounding, being where I am, in motion, and inviting a bit of kindness. When we first began this, a few people waved right away. Others took 1-2 months to respond. Teenagers never wave (which I'm fine with, especially if they're driving - we want those two hands on the wheel!). And at 3 months now, a few are even waving before I do... It's not a ground breaking idea; it's not a large ask of anyone. It just reminds me to see the people I live near, and invite them to see me in return. It feels like the first step to something... wishing wellness and wonder, fia you'll find a few storyblocks with Shakespeare's words in our whisper collection - click here or on the image above to take a look... what wants to come into your life now... a few of the ones you'll find...:-) Last week, after the first release of originals, someone asked me this: How can you let your work go so cheaply? she said. Doesn't it lessen the value of what you do?That question spun me around a bit. Because I thought it was obvious why I was doing it... But then I stopped: maybe it's obvious to me, but quite possibly Not At All Obvious To Anyone Who Is Not Me. HA. So, here's what I'd say about that: We all do it....
