what wants to come into your life now..;-)

what wants to come into your life now...

Last week, after the first release of originals, someone asked me this:

How can you let your work go so cheaply? she said. Doesn't it lessen the value of what you do?

That question spun me around a bit.

Because I thought it was obvious why I was doing it...

But then I stopped: maybe it's obvious to me, but quite possibly Not At All Obvious To Anyone Who Is Not Me. HA.

So, here's what I'd say about that:

We all do it. Holding on to things. A favorite shirt. Old letters. A now & then friend. But you also come to the point where you see it's time to let go. To open up for what wants to come into your life now...

I love the work I do. The lilt of the lines. The words tiptoeing across the page. The juxtaposition of brilliant colors. The feel of all the different papers.

But I also carry a bit of an ache around the older work. Because of how it was taken so abruptly. Oddly, because of that, much of the artwork of the last twenty-five years feels as if it's by another artist I've collected...

So, I've come to this.

As I go through my files, I thank each piece for what it taught me & then, with love, I let it go. I truly hope it will find someone, like you, who'll cherish it. That it will be a reminder to imagine & live & love with all of you in every moment.

Because that's where they came from, after all...

This week, we're releasing all sorts of the watercolor originals. Illustrations from the earlier books. A few of the classic prints (with more of those to come later). Watercolor masters for the first greeting cards. Of course, there are a few pen & inks & a crow or two (because Miranda wants to be involved no matter what we're doing around here...:-))

Many of you have told me how a particular story was a touchstone in your lives. As you were going out on your own. As you were navigating a hard stretch. As you were reaching for who you most wanted to be in the world...

Which is exactly why I'm NOT putting them on sale. Instead, I'm setting the prices incredibly low. To make it impossible for you to miss the invitation of what wants to come into your life now...:-)

I hope you drop in tomorrow at 2pm EDT & see what's there...

with love, kai

the calendars keep singing little songs of 'pick me, pick me...'

We know from personal experience that the 2024 calendars make great gifts. Because we've been giving them to the people we bump into almost every week. Our health care people. Our dentist. Our post office people. Yoshi's vet. & so on...

As it turns out, due to the whole printing fiasco this year, we have plenty to spare. Which is why we had an AHA moment.

It's BOGOHO Time...

Just this morning, Fia put the calendars on special as Buy One Get One Half Off. (Which is BOGOHO. Pronounced exactly like you'd think. HA.)

So, make a list of everyone you know & add them up & see how many calendars you're going to need. (Also, if you're thinking it'd be a good idea to use them as corporate gifts? Let. Us. Know. Soon. So. We. Can. Get. Them. To. You. In. Time.)

See how simple that is?

P.S. See why Fia doesn't often let me write the emails all by myself?...:-)

the unexpected gifts...:-) We run into this every year: little things we want to gift, unexpectedly... This year there's the now & then UPS backup driver, neighbors who already told us to keep an eye out for a holiday party invite & the giant St. Bernard next door who regularly exchanges barks with Yoshi... There are so many reasons to send along a card or a little something extra to people this time of year - to say thank you, we're thinking of you, or hang in there... the tricky thing is...

one more flock of crows (but that's it...:-)) Every time Fia creates a new flock of crows, she vows THAT WILL BE IT for a while. Seriously. No. Kidding. Except after this last batch, she had a sneaking suspicion that she'd somehow lost a pile of blocks that she set aside in a safe place... Of course, three days after we sent out the first flock (which disappeared rather quickly...), she found that pile of blocks she'd ever-so-safely set aside. Which means we have one more flock. Just in time...
